ERASER Book Description
Eraser is always cleaning up everyone else’s mistakes. Except for Ruler and Pencil Sharpener, none of the other school supplies seem to appreciate her. They all love how sharp Pencil is and how Tape and Glue help everyone stick together.

Eraser wants to create so that she can shine like the others. She decides to give it a try, but it’s not until the rubber meets the road that Eraser begins to understand a whole lot about herself.

ERASER Smashes Stereotypes
The main characters in many classic and popular picture books- whether they are human, animal, truck, or an ERASER- are almost always male. As Jennie Yabroff put it, “we should want to show our kids that girls can be anything — and anything can be a girl.”

There is still much to be done to spread the correct image of feminism, whether it is done through children’s literature or through mainstream media sources. Having ERASER be female was refreshing, however there is still a gap in children’s feminist/womanist literature that can continue to be filled.
(Printable PDF of children’s books that break gender stereotypes.)
Brave, Not Perfect
ERASER has done a superb job of teaching equality. As a society, we are prone to value extroverts over introverts in sports, parties, and classrooms. However, we need to teach children all personalities can be very powerful.
At home or in the classroom, strengths such as the ability to concentrate, listen and to think deeply and critically that are equally as strong as outspokenness and participation.

As we all know, an eraser’s job is to clean up mistakes. In this book, Eraser, feels left out because she never gets to create anything. After very relatable misunderstandings followed by help from friends, Eraser learns her true value and how important she is to the school supply team.
ERASER is an entertaining read aloud that will engage reluctant readers, but teachers and adults can use this as a great bridge into team building. The adorable illustrations are witty enough to evoke a few giggles from the adults as well which is ALWAYS a big bonus with a picture book.
