Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away Book Review
Today is Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021! It is my great honor to share with you a wonderful new picture book from Candlewick Press, EVELYN DEL REY IS MOVING AWAY. Like so many times in my own life, Evelyn is moving to a new city and has to say goodbye to her best friend. This sweet tribute to friendship follows Evelyn and Daniela as they spend one last afternoon together and make a plan to keep in touch and connect even when they are far apart.

EVELYN DEL REY IS MOVING AWAY Book Review
If you have ever read one of Newbery Award-winning author Meg Medina’s books, you know that the powerful words along with Sonia Sánchez’s vibrant illustrations make this book an instant favorite. Furthermore, I love the depiction of the girls in that they are different shades of brown. This type of representation of Spanish speakers who identify as Black is critical in children’s literature.
Listen in to hear the book read aloud:
The pages radiate warmth and humor as they reminisce about their neighbors, revel in their last moments of identical homes that make them feel like twin sisters instead of just friends, and relax in playful imagination as they play in empty packing boxes.
The story tugs at your heartstrings watching their tearful goodbyes and you almost feel their grief in their hugs to signal the end of a special time in both Evelyn and Daniella’s life. This portrait of sisterhood with two girls of color is a joy to add to any home or classroom library.
