Mommy, Am I Brown Book Review
One of the first academic skills a young child is introduced to is naming colors. Kids learn the sky is blue, the grass is green, etc. In turn, I have a fabulous picture book that will take it one step further. No surprise, MOMMY, AM I BROWN is written by a teacher who understands that colors are the gateway to teaching so many important themes.

Mommy, Am I Brown
I could give you a list of 50 books that teach young children about colors using animals, refrigerator items, etc. However, when the discussion turns to celebrating the different colors of skin and cultural backgrounds, it gets awkward quickly. The topic of race is too often reduced to encouraging our children to ignore the racial differences around them. This can be dangerous. Furthermore, this idea of “colorblindness” when it comes to ethnicity/race will result in LESS inclusion in the classroom and in a child’s daily life.

In MOMMY, AM I BROWN, the story starts with a highly relatable trip to the park. The conversation begins when a young boy named Eli innocently asks his mother, “Am I Brown”? She answers affirmatively and he begins a journey of celebrating the colors around him. This is significant because the color of his skin is just as relevant as the blue sky and the green grass.
This perceptive mother weaves a multitude of affirmations through simple colors. Purple for the color of dreams coming true, green for the earth that is a part of you; the symbolism and literal interpretation of colors makes this book a must read.

Colors Can Make You Courageous
The text is paired with bright and bold illustrations by Mileidy Fernandez which is such an important detail in books for pre-school/Kindergarten age when they begin to ask more complicated questions about the world around them. Eli spreads his wings and feels more emboldened to feel confident just the way he is with each new color that is introduced.
Consequently, this can be the bridge to discussing how there will always be people in life who want to dim your light from shining to make themselves feel better. However, the message that kids will walk away with from this book is that your imagination and your spirit belongs to you, and only you.
