Raina’s (Un)Happy Birthday Review
As adults, we search for creative ways to allow kids to express themselves. For many children when they are young, reading a book about a character gives them that very outlet. Raina’s (Un)Happy Birthday is a beautiful book that will resonate with so many to give children the words to express how they are feeling.

Raina’s (Un)Happy Birthday
Sometimes the most important conversations begin with innocent comments like “your breath smells”. Albeit embarrassing, these forthright comments are what parents and caretakers can learn the most from. Stifling these honest reactions can have catastrophic results if unchecked long-term.
In this beautiful book, Raina’s (Un)Happy Birthday, Raina along with her stuffed bunny Lola brilliantly tackle consent and boundaries. Raina confides in Lola that her birthday is an unhappy day. She tells Lola that her grandpa’s beard is too scratchy, her grandpa’s hugs are too tight, her aunt touches her hair, and her cousin’s boogers are just GROSS.
Why You Need This Book on Your Shelf
Listen below to the author Britta Stromeyer Esmail describe what ignited her passion for writing this picture book in her own words.
The best part of Raina’s story is how the serious themes of boundaries and consent are woven throughout a humorous and relatable birthday celebration. Moreover, celebrate the courage of one little girls conviction to decide for herself when to speak up. Raina is confident to give alternatives to her family members that they can both agree upon.
Not only does this book have delightful illustrations, the author consulted her own children to ensure the illustrations will make readers laugh out loud. There are so many ways to use this story as a mentor text for the classroom as well.

With the rise of the #metoo and #timesup movements, there are stories from survivors everywhere. However, not all of the details of these stories are appropriate for young children.
Alternatively, Raina’s journey shows how innocent family gatherings like birthday parties are filled with adults giving commands. Girls like Raina are directed to touch, hug, kiss, and sit on laps, all without acknowledging they may be uncomfortable.
Furthermore, this lovely picture book is a guide for well-intentioned parents, teachers, and caregivers to be more aware and responsible.
What Others are Saying
Reader Views Kids “highly recommends it.”
“Beautifully illustrated and eloquently written, Raina’s (Un) Happy Birthday shows that girls, whatever age they may be, have the power to choose how they show and receive love. This is a powerful message for girls and boys and everyone who cares for them.” – Loung Ung, bestselling author, activist, and co-screenplay writer of a 2017 Netflix Original Movie directed by Angelina Jolie based on her memoir, First They Killed My Father, now streaming on Netflix in 190 countries.
