Thank you for sharing this information. I teach high school English, and often, by the time students reach me, they have already decided they are not readers. It is so important that parents and teachers work to help children develop a love of reading/being read to early, and then work with them when they’re ready to learn to read by themselves.

As an ex-secondary school English teacher I read this with interest!

I often could not believe how many 11 year-olds came into my class who could barely read. Some of this was down to poor teaching, some to the strange reading programmes that the government impose upon the primary curriculum, and the remainder because some kids just don’t have the aptitude for reading.

You can tell that I thoroughly agree with your post!

I am so thankful for your feedback Lisa. There are environmental factors such as poor quality teaching or curriculum, but children who are not given the reading foundational skills early are often lost by the time they are 11 like you said. In Texas, US, they build jail cells based on the number of children who fail the reading standardized tests in 3rd grade (10 years old). We have got a reading crisis and we need to shout from the rooftops how to solve it so that children’s futures are not at stake!
