Travel Hacks for Bookworm Kids
Whether you are commuting to an after school activity or taking a transcontinental trip, traveling is a huge opportunity for quality reading time for all levels of bookworms. Below are a few of my favorite travel hacks for bookworm kids. These will keep everybody happy on the go, without adding 60 pounds to the suitcase.

Travel Hacks for Bookworm Kids
A must have on any trip are audio books. My favorites for the digital bookworms:
Story Nory– FREE audio stories for kids, including fairytales, original stories, myths, poems, music, history and audiobooks. Each story is read beautifully by professional actors. You can use wi-fi or download over 30 podcasts before leaving for your trip.
Storyline Online {FREE} The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s award-winning and Daytime Emmy-nominated children’s literacy website, Storyline Online, streams imaginatively produced videos featuring celebrated actors. These include Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Chris Pine, Wanda Sykes, Justin Theroux, and Betty White reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations.
Storyline Online is available 24 hours a day for children, parents, and educators worldwide. For each book, supplemental curriculum developed by a literacy specialist is provided. This collaboration aims to strengthen comprehension and verbal and written skills for English-language learners worldwide.
Bonus: Oh, What a Tangle! {Free} Because traveling for curly kids means soooo many tangles! This YouTube bedtime story is a must bookmark for the road. This hilarious book is great for a quick before bed read aloud for any child, but especially fun for the ones with curly hair.
If you have a budget for audiobooks, I highly recommend checking out the Kindle Fire 7 Kids Edition Tablet where there is huge library of wonderful and downloadable books.
Headphones
With audio books comes the need for headphones so each bookworm can enjoy a favorite book.
For the little ones in the caravan, we love the JLab JBuddies Toddler Headphones. The small, easily adjustable headband is a perfect fit for children as young as 2 years. Additionally, because the volume is capped at 85 decibels, these kids’ headphones are an excellent first pair for your traveling toddler. Finally, these headphones have a lifetime guarantee!
For elementary age kids, we love these RiBox Cat Ear Bluetooth Headphones. These spectacular headphones have a glittering prismatic LED cat ears. The charming design has a maxed out volume of 85 decibels. This translates to caregivers resting assured that kids’ hearing won’t be negatively impacted. These are such a great hack because they’re also wired. So if the battery-enabled wireless mode runs out, or if kids want to switch to watching a movie on a long plane ride, you can also plug in using the included braided audio cable.
Another great set of headphones is the LilGadgets Connect+ Headphones. Comfort + conveinient; they fold up neatly, and come with a traveling pouch. Secondly, they have a SharePort allowing multiple people to share audio without a splitter. Finally, the sound is ‘adult-worthy’ quality, yet it’s limited to a 93-decibel max to help protect growing, but still-little ears.
Bonus: A portion of each LilGadgets headphones purchase goes towards bullying prevention and awareness in schools through partner organizations.
The Book Seat
The Book Seat is my favorite hack for the Middle School/High School crowd who has just a few longer books for the road.
Unlike most book stands, The Book Seat molds to whatever surface it’s on. This brilliant item can set up a reading space in the smallest, most awkward spaces. (Like an airplane seat.) It can also be used as a travel pillow so kids (or adults) get some sleep between chapters.
Canvased book covers
When you think of zipped canvas book covers, most people think of it as a Bible cover. However, there is good reason they are mainly popular for Bibles. They’re accessible, efficient, and a durable solution to carry multiple middle grade books.
If you don’t have the budget to buy a canvas book cover, I highly recommend repurposing a lunch box. It’s also the perfect size to carry 4-5 middle grade or chapter books.
Hope your next trip is filled with stories and adventure. Be sure to comment below with your favorite tips and hacks for bookworms!
