Why Bedtime Sucks Book Review
When you’re a nocturnal owl stuck inside a growing kid; bedtime is the worst. WHY BEDTIME SUCKS packs a lot of punches of totally reasonable arguments to delay bedtime as long as possible. MaKayla Rose has written this hilarious story that voices how most kids feel when their parent/caregiver turns out the lights.
Without a doubt, kids will immediately be nodding in agreement at this delightful read aloud on why bedtime does indeed suck.

Why Bedtime Sucks
This dazzling story began when 1st grader MaKayla Rose was more than frustrated at the “rules” for an early bed time for kids. The routine of choosing a story before bed also had her frustrated. She looked through her shelf to select a book that voiced how she was feeling and couldn’t find it. MaKayla Rose took action and solved the problem by making up her own.
Million Dollar Ideas Always Happen at Bedtime
Who among us hasn’t thought of a brilliant, million dollar idea and forgot because you didn’t write it down? Reason #1 for kids for WHY BEDTIME SUCKS is EXACTLY the same for adults: As soon as you lay down, you immediately think of an idea. However, by the time you get up, you forget.
The sensible reasons MaKayla Rose rattled off in her story of why kids are no different from adults and there should be exceptions to bedtimes was just the beginning. Her parents recorded her verbal storytelling to send to the grandparents. In turn, this simple step would start her on a path to achieving her goal to become a published author.
Believing in Yourself Begins with an Idea
The story of WHY BEDTIME SUCKS was printed at first just for fun on a piece of paper. Then again for school for portfolio writing presentation complete with illustrations with a multicultural family that mirrored her own. She was shocked the next day when her classmates had all come back to school with stories of their own on WHY BROCCOLI SUCKS, etc.
MaKayla Rose’s supportive teacher cheered her on to continue her goal as a story-teller. When she had her story bound at the end of the year as a gift for her teacher, it sparked the motivation to make this dream of publishing her writing a reality.
It’s Not a “REAL Book” Until the Barnes and Noble Book Signing
With a traditional publisher, MaKayla Rose would not be able to control illustrations and would likely mean changing characters so they weren’t a multiracial family. They also wanted her to change the title from “WHY BEDTIME SUCKS” to “I’M NOT TIRED”. So MaKayla Rose and her family decided to ask the community of IRMC families to support the mission of having books on the shelf about everyday life such as bedtime, but just so happens to have multicultural representation.
Watch this video that beautifully describes their amazing Kickstarter campaign:
MaKayla Rose has already raised over $4000 towards her fundraising goal and is receiving a tremendous amount of local support in the press in South Jersey. Now she is looking to take her mission of inclusion national.
Writing children’s books is one way I can help close the literacy gap.
MaKayla Rose’s illustrator Isabel Rivera, who resides in Cancun, Mexico has captured her vision beautifully. After this campaign is funded, WHY BEDTIME SUCKS will eventually be translated into Spanish as well. It is critical that all multicultural kids need to see themselves represented in all types of books, including defending their right to stay up late.
Changemakers Come in All Shapes and Sizes
MaKayla Rose is not letting her age define her or stop her from putting a book on the shelf that she wants to read. MaKayla Rose has beautiful prizes to accompany her book that kids will LOVE including stickers, door hangers, enamel pins, and there is even an option to be included in the illustration of the book. For all the amazing ways to get this book onto as many shelves as possible, check out the WHY BEDTIME SUCKS Kickstarter campaign.
